What Is Palliative Care?

Transcript:

Palliative Care is care that is provided to a person who has a progressive disease and is expected to die. This can be from diseases such as terminal and life-limiting cancer, motor neuron diseases or organ failure, just to name a few.

The main objective of palliative care is to help manage the symptoms and to make this person’s life as comfortable as possible. This can include treating severe pain, supporting home services, helping the family come to terms with upcoming life changes, and may include helping the palliative client and their family meet cultural or spiritual obligations.

End of life care is part of this care and we can assist you to die at home with appropriate, safe and effective management and supports. We link you with and work closely with the palliative care consultants and palliative care doctors to ensure your needs and end of life care needs meet your wishes and or the wishes of your loved one. We will use your Advanced Care Directive if you have one to ensure all your wishes are carried through. We will work with you and your family every step of the way.

Palliative care doesn’t necessarily begin when the person is nearing the end of their lives. Some care clients find it helps to have this care available or prepared for, at the time of their diagnosis as this allows them time, to have their plans in place for when their condition deteriorates. If you or a loved one would benefit from palliative care, you can learn more about options available and steps to take to receive this care either from your GP, Palliative Care Australia or by speaking to one of our support carers here at Vital Home Health Care Services.
